• Hospital awarded national patient experience award
The Massac Memorial Hospital (MMH) board has appointed Rick Goins to the full time chief executive officer position at MMH. Goins has served as interim CEO since Dec. 1. He began working at MMH in November 2015 as the chief operating officer.
Goins has a bachelors degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a masters degree in health administration from Ohio State University. He grew up in Yorkville and now resides in Massac County with his wife, Kim, and two sons, Ryan and Brady.
During Goins’ report to the board at the April 25 board meeting, he announced the hospital was recently awarded the Outstanding Patient Experience Award which recognizes hospitals for providing outstanding patient experiences based on 10 different measures related to doctor and nurse communication, hospital cleanliness and noise levels, and medication and post-charge care instructions.
A Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey is randomly administered to patients after their stay to publicly report the patient’s perspective of hospital care. The surveys are submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.
The data is then used by Healthgrades for scoring the awards. Healthgrades is a research company that helps consumers find the right doctor and helps physicians represent their practice. The company is committed to practicing transparency in healthcare.
MMH ranked in the top 15 percent in the nation for patient care. Eighty-two percent of patients said they would recommend MMH to someone else — 12 percent above the national average.
“This award tells us our employees are doing a great job with working with our patients,” Goins said. “When the patients come here they are feeling very positive about us.”
Ninety-three percent of patients felt the doctors communicated well with them, and 87 percent felt that nurses communicated well.

The hospital was also awarded the Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2016.
