Memorial Day activities highlight holiday weekend

With Memorial Day fast approaching, various activities throughout the Metropolis Planet area are being planned in observance of the holiday.
The Mound City National Cemetery is hosting its annual Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
This annual event honors all veterans for their dedication, their service and their sacrifices.
There will be free shuttle bus service at the former St. Mary’s Church, located at 517 Walnut St. in Mound City, to and from the cemetery, beginning at 9 a.m.  
The program will begin with a processional from Mound City out to the National Cemetery. This year’s ceremony will honor women veterans This processional will include various motorcycle organizations, and the Southeast Missouri Military Vehicle Association will transport women veterans.  
The program will include patriotic music, historian notes by Ella Nora Shepherd, special recognition of women veterans and a Roll Call of Honor that will honor deceased veterans from all wars beginning with the Civil War
The guest speaker will be Sue Wieting Richter, a native of Villa Ridge, who began her 45-year career with the American Red Cross in 1969 providing therapeutic recreation programs in military hospitals beginning at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.  The public is also invited to help place flags on all the graves at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Local military organizations will be placing flags on veterans’ graves in Metropolis on Saturday.
“Due to the fact that we are losing more and more veterans every year and are putting out approximately 2000 flags, we are asking for volunteers to help,” explained Larry Wells, American Legion Post 306 commander.  “Anyone wanting to help needs to be at the American Legion Hall, located at 321 Market St. in Metropolis, at 7 a.m. on Saturday.”
A breakfast, prepared by the American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary, will be served at 7 a.m. for those helping, with individuals going out to local cemeteries following the breakfast.
The Metropolis Boy Scouts will assist the veterans by picking up the flags at area cemeteries on Tuesday.

Memorial Day services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 29 at Memorial Park in Metropolis next to the public library.
The posting of colors, invitation to veterans and opening prayer will be presented.
Taps will be performed, and a 21-gun salute will be featured.
The guest speaker will be Rev. David Siere of Brookport First Baptist Church, and the American Heritage Girls Troop IL 1230 and Trail Life USA Troop IL 2343 will sing the National Anthem.
Everyone is encouraged to come honor those who served.
The Daniel Chapman Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will sponsor a Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. Monday, May 29 on the lawn at Vienna Public Library.
The dedication of the new Veteran’s Memorial by the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post 5222 will be held during the program.
The speaker will be Richard Brumley.
Everyone is invited.
Memorial Day services will be held on Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church in Rosebud.
Morning services will begin at 10:30 a.m.  A basket lunch will be held at noon, followed by the afternoon service at 1 p.m.
The public is welcome.
