Metropolis is again ready to host a super-sized Celebration, complete with Superman, Lois Lane and a couple of villains, as celebrities Dean Cain, Margot Kidder, Sarah Douglas and James Marsters will appear at this year’s event.
The 39th annual Superman Celebration, begins Thursday, June 8 at 5 p.m. at the Superman Statue, where there will also be a skit and a ribbon cutting ceremony. Following the opening ceremony there will be an award presentation by Massac County United Way, which will present the recipients of the Helping Hands Awards and the Metropolis Planet will announce its 2017 recipient of the annual Lois Lane Award
A staple of the annual Celebration for the Man of Steel always includes celebrity guests with a ‘super’ connection and this year fans will get to see a former Superman, Lois Lane and a couple of villains too.
Actor Dean Cain will make a second appearance to the Superman Celebration. Cain is best known for portraying Clark Kent and Superman on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
His list of acting credits is lengthy but most recently, Cain has been portraying Jeremiah Danvers, the foster dad of Supergirl on the WB series Supergirl, which stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, a.k.a. Supergirl.
Making a return appearance to the this year’s Celebration is none other than Lois Lane from the silver screen Margot Kidder. She began her acting career in the mid 1970s and in 1978 her agent connected her to Richard Donner, who was directing a film called Superman. When Kidder auditioned for the role, she nabbed the role and the rest, as they say, is history.
Kidder would then star aside beloved Superman, the late Chistopher Reeve in Superman, Superman II, Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
Since that time Kidder has continued her acting career and even appeared in some episodes of Smallville. Currently Kidder is in the process of writing a book, she tours the world meeting fans at conventions and is a speaker on mental health issues.
Actor James Marsters will make his first appearance to the Celebration and is known by Superman fans as Brianiac from the former WB series Smallville and the voice of Lex Luther in on the DVD release of Superman: Doomsday.
Still other fans associate Marsters as Spike, from the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the spin off, Angel.
Rounding out the celebrity lineup is one of the most known villains from the silver screen Sarah Douglas, who portrayed Ursa in the Superman and Superman II, which put the world-wide spotlight on Douglas, who was already know to audiences in the United Kingdom from her work in theatre, film and television.
Douglas continued her acting career, appearing in such works as Conan The Destroyer, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Solarbabies, and in the former CBS television series Falcon Crest.
She does frequent vocal work for productions of Dorian Gray and for The Disney Company and stays busy with work in the U.S. and in the U.K.
