Friday, June 16, 2017 - Updated: 10:07 AMWe want to give a big shout out of kudos to everyone involved in helping to bring the 39th annual Superman Celebration to life this year. Truly to put on a four day event takes a lot of people working tirelessly behind the scenes all year to pull it off.
Some people may say the Superman Celebration has the same old thing year after year, but clearly, something is working right because the people keep coming. The Superman Celebration does have a lot of events that are the same year after year and that is good but we do hope that organizers will continue to try to add new events and entertainment in order to keep the event fresh and enticing.
There are a lot of bigger comic book conventions held in bigger cities and the Superman Celebration cannot compete with those bigger conventions. Quite honestly, the Celebration is like a small town convention combined with the feel of a local county fair.
Local people may joke about how there is too much spandex and too many people dressed in it who should not be, but the one thing people are guaranteed to see during the course of the four days is many hardworking volunteers and thousands of smiles from both the children and many adults too.
The Superman Celebration began as small event in 1978 and has now blossomed into a four-day event that draws people to our town from all over the world and becomes like an annual homecoming to thousands of Superman fans across the world. Many of those faithful fans also come back to the Celebration year after year to volunteer their time with events.
Sure, the parking around Market Street is blocked off and parking becomes a bit of a hassle, but let’s face it, four days of blocked off parking is a slight inconvenience, but if it helps in bringing some joy and happiness into other peoples’ lives, then it is worth it.
Not only does it bring in tourists to our town, but it also brings vendors who come to town to set up their food, retail products, artwork and other items to sell.
In the world today, which seems filled with division and all too often filled with violence, Metropolis is doing its part to bring four days of good, clean family fun to share with our locals as well as individuals from all over the world.
The weather was absolutely ideal and a little uncharacteristic compared to most Celebrations. Typically there is usually at least one good thunderstorm and the temperatures are usually much warmer. So we hope that everyone had a chance to get out to the Celebration and enjoy some of the sights and sounds of it.
More than that, we hope next year’s big 40th annual Superman Celebration will bring even more people to town than ever before and our local community will get out and support not only the Celebration, but also all of the other local events.
Let’s also hope there are many other writers, artists and directors who will keep the movies and stories about Superman alive and going strong so the Superman Celebration will continue to grow.
Super thanks to all of the volunteers for putting on a great event, and we look forward to other great local events planned for the second half of the year.
