March Madness — 2017

March Madness is in full bloom this week as the smaller two classes have whittled things down to their final four.

At Carbondale, in elite eight action, Effingham St. Anthony overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to oust perennial downstaters Woodlawn.

The Class A Final Four consists of Effingham, Chicago Hope Academy, Okawville and Newark.

The Class AA Final Four is Mt. Carmel, Kankakee McNamara, Chicago Orr and Monticello.

In Tuesday night’s big matchup at Benton in Class AAA, the host Rangers held off the ‘Running Comanches from Cahokia 48-43 to advance to the round of 16.

Coach Ron Winemiller credited his team’s ability to limit the number of offensive rebounds the high-flying Comanches gathered as the big key. Down the stretch, the Rangers were uncharacteristically off from the free throw line as Cahokia fouled frantically at game’s end. But Tim Henson’s clutch late rebound and huge late free throw kept Cahokia at arm’s length.

The Rangers will meet the winner of Wednesday night’s Breese Central and Centralia matchup in the sectional final Friday night in Benton.
