Massac County let a 4-0 lead slip away in the last three innings as Carbondale came back to win a 5-4 contest Tuesday evening.
Taylor Jenkins led the game off with a homer to center and the three outs in the inning for Massac were all on hard hit balls.
Bailey Duckworth cranked one out in the second, and Massac made two more hard outs in the second. Two more runs in the third and it looked like smooth sailing for Massac.
But a fourth inning pitching change for Carbondale turned the tide for the Terriers.
A slower delivery by Carbondale’s second hurler turned line drives into pop-ups by Massac.
Carbondale chipped away with two runs in the fifth off of starter Ellie Weber and added one more in the sixth. They nailed it down with two more in the top of the seventh and Massac made no noise in the final at bat for the 5-4 loss.
The girls split a pair Saturday with Johnston City and Marion. They beat the Lady Indians 9-7 behind a 12 hit onslaught. Camdyn Boyd and Weber each had three hits to lead the girls. Payton Pierce, Kara Womack and Duckworth all kicked in a pair of knocks. Duckworth and Pierce each had two RBI as well.
The ladies dropped an 8-7 decision to Marion Saturday as Mahailee Parker had control issues for Massac, walking seven Marion batters and surrendering a big four spot in the fourth inning.
Massac outhit Marion 16-6 but still came up short. Duckworth and Waldrop combined for seven of Massac’s 16 hits with Pierce, Karsyn Fritch and Jenkins all adding a pair of knocks. A couple of key errors and the walks were too much for Massac’s bats to overcome.
Last week also saw the girls way-lay Ballard. The girls scored in every inning but the second and slugged five homers along the way.
Addie Waldrop clouted two, Jenkins continued her homer-fest with a “tater,” Pierce ripped a long one and Duckworth continued her own hot streak with a long one.
