Caleb Duckworth and Summer Smallman were each awarded $1000 after receiving the Coach “JD” Seitzinger memorial scholarship.
The scholarship fund was set up to award cash scholarships to entering college freshmen who have participated in any of the sports Seitzinger coached at Massac County High School (MCHS). These include track and field, cross country and boys basketball.
Candidates are selected based on their drive and hard work, commitment to the team and good sportsmanship. “Qualities that my husband valued in his athletes,” explained DeEtta Seitzinger.
The applicants submitted no less than a 150-word essay citing their accomplishments in school and sports and their future plans and goals.
Duckworth is the son of Brad and Kristi Duckworth.
He will be attending Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, majoring in electrical engineering.
Smallman is the daughter of Brandon Smallman and Stephanie Smallman.
She will be attending Shawnee Community College and later transfer to a four-year institute where she will be majoring in teaching.
